Meditation on Psalm 16

O Lord, you are my Lord,

The highest good and first of my pursuits.

My hopes and dreams, for other things,

Are shallow, empty trifles next to you.

For the all the treasures that I’ve found in the world,

That vie for the affection of my heart,

Can never hope to satisfy,

Apart from being filled by you my God.

But still my heart desires

The thrill of sin’s intoxicating charm.

Preserve my soul—don’t let me go—

Or sure will your beloved come to harm.

For those who chase another god

Shall perish in their sorrows in the night,

But the fellowship of your holy ones

Will fill me up with wonder and delight.

And when I stop to think

That you are always there at my right hand,

My flesh exults, my spirit soars,

Rejoicing in the good that you have planned.

For you make known to me the Light of the World,

In your presence there is overflowing joy—

Pleasures deep and pure are found at your side,

My portion and unmerited reward,

My inheritance is Jesus Christ, the Lord.
