Lyrics.
Tree
Rising from the ground unnoticed,
A tender shaft of golden-green,
A husk of heaven’s light exploded
Where it fell the other week.
Perhaps it was a chance occasion
That placed it there within the ground
And it made it wait for the occasion
Of the rain to draw it out.
And it’s growing, growing, growing,
Growing in the earth,
And it’s growing, growing, growing,
Into the life that gave it birth.
Soon it’s roots begin their grappling,
Into the firmness of the sod,
While the sprig becomes a sapling
Branching up to worship God.
Greening leaves burst from her hardwood—
Unfurling, harvesting the sun—
Deep within the dirt she’s watered,
Where streams of living waters run.
And she’s growing, growing, growing,
Growing in the earth.
And she’s growing, growing, growing,
Into the life that gave her birth.
Then the Gardner comes to prune her,
Cutting out what causes harm.
With his loving hands he mends her,
Binding up each fragile arm.
Around each root he digs to nourish,
That his planting may bear fruit,
To see his dear ones grow and flourish
In the garden of his truth.
And she’s growing, growing, growing,
Growing in the earth.
And she’s growing, growing, growing,
Into the life that gave her birth.
